The Delhi government will distribute Ayushman Bharat cards to eligible senior citizens, aged 70 years and above, under the Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana at the Thyagaraj Stadium on Monday.

According to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, every registered senior citizen will receive a unique health card under the scheme.

“This age group is the most in need of medical care. The government is fully accountable to them and will ensure they receive complete care on a priority basis,” she said.

A key feature of this scheme is that it will provide all essential health services to senior citizens regardless of their socio-economic background, the government had said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the State Health Agency for the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has created 1,71,482 Ayushman Bharat cards under the scheme. Those eligible can now avail of services under the Centre’s flagship health insurance scheme.

The newly formed BJP government, in its 100-day action plan, had announced it would enrol at least 1 lakh beneficiaries under the insurance scheme within 30 days.

Beneficiaries of the scheme will be selected based on data from the National Food Security Act and the Socio-Economic and Caste Census 2011. Senior citizens aged over 70 years will also be included.

Sources in the state health department said those whose accounts have been generated are being informed about the Ayushman Bharat cards via SMS.

Under the scheme, an estimated 6.54 lakh of the poorest families in Delhi will receive health coverage up to Rs 5 lakh. Importantly, 4.5 lakh families with people over the age of 70 — some of whom may already be eligible for the cover as per their economic status — will also benefit.

The Delhi government will provide an additional cover of Rs 5 lakh to those eligible.
