The Delhi government is planning to authorise all hospitals and health institutions to issue birth certificates within three days of a child’s birth or at the time of discharge.

Often a tedious task, the process of obtaining a birth certificate can take 28 days to a month. Parents often run from one municipal office to another trying to get one.

“The key aim behind this decision is to streamline the process, reduce burden at the civic and district offices, and help parents obtain the certificates without any hassle. This will also help the government maintain accurate data of births and deaths of children in hospitals…,” said a senior government official.
