Delhi govt nod to replace old Gramin Sewa vehicles with electric ones
The decision comes as the existing Gramin Sewa vehicles are nearing the end of their 15-year lifespan and are in poor condition, said officials.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot told mediapersons, “By replacing the old Gramin Sewa vehicles with electric ones, we are taking a significant step towards reducing pollution and enhancing the travel experience for commuters. The electric vehicles will offer greater comfort and efficiency, improving residents' overall quality of life.”
Aiming to promote cleaner transportation, the Delhi government has recently given its nod to replace Gramin Sewa vehicles, which are run on clean fuel like CNG, with electric alternatives.

According to guidelines, the owner of a Gramin Sewa vehicle will have to apply online for an electric one using an Aadhaar number for verification. If an Aadhaar number is unavailable, an enrollment ID can be used. Following this, the registering authority will issue a no-dues certificate (NDC) within seven days.
The authority will ensure the vehicle is not involved in legal issues, there are no pending taxes and fines, and that it has a clear record on the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) database. If any issues are found, the owner will be notified and the same must be resolved within seven days.

After receiving the NDC, the owner will have to get his vehicle scrapped within 15 days. Following this, he can purchase a new electric Gramin Sewa vehicle. The new vehicle will receive a permit for the same route as the old one, said officials.
Gramin Sewa vehicles were introduced in 2011 for last-mile connectivity and to serve the densely populated areas of Delhi. Currently, more than 2,000 such vehicles are in service.
