Delhi,as the national capital, will turn hundred on December 12,but the government has been avoiding any celebrations on the day. The reason: While King George V did announce the shift of the national capital to Delhi from then Calcutta on December 12,1911,he did so after his coronation as the Emperor of India.

“It is more appropriate to call the occasion ‘the re-emergence of Delhi’,as it was the capital of the country before the British took over, and in 1911,it was restored to its original status. There is no reason to observe December 12,as it marks the coronation of King George V and is more of a colonial feat. Of course he did announce the shift of the capital from Calcutta to Delhi on the day,but it was only in January that a formal notification was issued and the shift was implemented gradually,” said a senior official of the Delhi government.

The Ministry of Culture, meanwhile, has drawn up an elaborate schedule of events planned for the centenary year celebrations. A high-level advisory committee has been set up to chalk out these plans, which the government insists will focus on “re-emergence of Delhi as the national capital of India”.

The 15-member committee — comprising historians, conservationists, heritage experts, senior government officials and representatives from civic agencies — met on Monday. Exhibitions of photos and archival documents, national seminars and workshops on the evolution and history of Delhi and cultural events have been suggested for the year-long celebration.

Secretary Culture Jawhar Sircar told Newsline,“We are drawing up plans for year-long celebrations, which will start sometime in January. The first event might be a grand show at the Red Fort, but the details are yet to be finalised.”

Asked whether there will be any celebrations on December 12,Sircar said,“I have no knowledge of any such celebration on the day.”
