Two days after a 35-year-old sanitation worker died after allegedly inhaling toxic fumes while cleaning a drain in North West Delhi’s Shakurpur, his co-worker died Monday afternoon.

Rohit (30) was among three workers who had fallen sick Saturday afternoon while cleaning the drain that comes under the Public Works Department.

Police said he was transferred to Safdarjung hospital after his condition became critical. “Rohit died at the hospital Monday afternoon. The other two labourers who fell sick are fine,” said DCP (North West) Vijayanta Arya.

Police said they have been unable to establish contact with the family members of the victims. A senior officer said the men, who hailed from Madhya Pradesh, lived in a rented accommodation in Pooth Kalan.

A case was registered based on a complaint by a worker, Gorelal, who alleged the men were forced into the drain and were not given safety gear.

Police arrested the contractor and private supervisor Saturday.
