In desperate bid to find missing son, man enters Delhi drain as rescue ops continue

A 15-year-old boy, Mithun, fell into a drain in Delhi’s Jasola area while trying to catch a kite. As rescue teams searched for him for a second day, his father entered the drain himself in a desperate bid to find his son.

A 15-year-old boy went missing after falling into a drain in Delhi’s Jasola while trying to catch a kite.

Twenty-four hours on, despite a search operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) and several other agencies, there was no trace of 15-year-old Mithun who fell into a drain in Southeast Delhi’s Jasola area on Saturday while trying to catch a kite. His helpless father, Awadhesh, then entered the drain on Sunday in a desperate bid to find him.

Rescue personnel and officers were present at the spot as the distraught father stepped into the dirty, fast-flowing water, hoping to find Mithun.

The incident also triggered anger among the family and local residents, who gathered on the road on Sunday and blocked traffic, demanding that the authorities intensify the search. They accused the administration of negligence and alleged that the agencies were relying on wooden poles to search the drain instead of conducting a more thorough operation.

Officials involved in the search said the strong current and dense vegetation around the drain were making the operation difficult. The NDRF team had reached the spot soon after receiving information on Saturday and continued the search until around 9 pm. The operation resumed on Sunday morning and continued till late evening.

According to police, a PCR call was received at 12 pm on Saturday reporting that a boy, around 15, had fallen into a drain and was missing. Police teams reached the spot and identified the boy as Mithun, who lived with his family in Jasola.

Police said preliminary investigation suggested that Mithun had fallen into the drain while trying to catch a kite.

Teams from the NDRF, Fire Services and DDMA, along with officials from UP Irrigation, Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Development Authority and the SDM’s office, were involved in the search.

For Awadhesh, however, the wait has been unbearable. With every passing hour bringing no news of his son, he entered the drain himself—searching through the dirty waters in the hope of bringing Mithun home.
