In an early morning patrol that turned violent, a Delhi Police head constable was struck by a speeding car and carried on its bonnet for several kilometres before managing to dismount, the Delhi Police said on Friday.

The suspect, who fled the city, was arrested days later in Kolkata.

According to officials, Head Constable Praveen was on patrol with Assistant Sub-Inspector Naveen in a PCR van near the Bhalswa landfill around 6 am on Wednesday when they noticed a suspicious Hyundai i20 car near the GTK bypass.

When they signalled the vehicle to stop and asked the driver to step out, the driver attempted to flee.

“In an effort to stop the vehicle, Praveen stood in front of the car. However, the driver accelerated the vehicle and drove directly at him, causing Praveen to land on the bonnet of the car,” a police official said.

Praveen clung to the bonnet, dangling from side to side as the driver refused to stop. “He managed to jump off when the car slowed down near the Azadpur Mandi red light,” the official added.

Injured and without his phone — which had become lodged between the windshield and the bonnet — Praveen borrowed a phone from a passerby to alert authorities.

The incident was reported to Bhalswa Dairy police station at 6:28 am through a PCR call placed by the injured officer.

Praveen sustained injuries to his fingers and knees and was taken to Babu Jag Jeevan Ram Hospital.

An FIR was registered under Sections 221, 222A, 132, and 109(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The accused, identified as Karamveer, was later traced through CCTV footage, which showed him fleeing the city after the incident.

A police team tracked him to Kolkata and made the arrest on Thursday.

“Acting swiftly, the team apprehended the accused in Kolkata after following due legal procedures.

He is being brought to Delhi for further investigation,” a police official said.
