Charred bodies of two children were recovered from a house in central Delhi on Thursday, said police.Police suspect that a cylinder inside their house caught fire, which spread quickly and engulfed the entire building. “The deceased, Ganesh (10) and his sister Swati (5), were charred in the fire. Crime teams and the local SDM were also called to the spot,” said DCP (central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa said.
Mother of the deceased, Suman, also sustained 55 per cent burn injuries and is currently admitted at Ram Lal Anand hospital. Her son Dhruv (7) sustained about 70 per cent burn injuries and is at the same hospital.
Family members of the victims said when the fire broke out, they got busy evacuating the building and forgot that the children were still inside. “Suman kept pleading that her children were inside, but nobody paid attention as they were busy taking her to the hospital. When the fire subsided, the bodies of the children were discovered by police,” said Mamta, the children’s aunt.
Maya, a neighbour said that around 2.30 am, she and other reisdents heard muffled noises of the family banging their fists against their main door. The ground floor occupants fled, while those on the third floor went towards the terrace. After multiple were made , a fire tender came to the spot. “It was a narrow lane, with space for only two people to move at one time. We laid water pipes in the area while the residents had to douse the fire themselves,” said a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officer.
