The Delhi Assembly passed the 2013-2014 budget on Tuesday. The opposition BJP staged a walkout during the final debate on this years budget proposals.
Health Minister A K Walia lauded the budget Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit presented on March 20. He said a tax-free budget was presented for the first time. The government has not levied any fresh tax and there has been no hike either. Moreover, the social sector received the highest priority in terms of budgetary allocation with an outlay of Rs 10,359 crore about 65 per cent of the total plan, Walia said.
The Health Minister also refuted BJPs allegations that it was a poll budget. It is just a budget presented in an election year, nothing more. The government is striving hard to make Delhi a welfare state in true spirit, Walia said.
However, the opposition BJP contested the governments claims and stated that there was nothing new in this budget. Leader of the Opposition V K Malhotra said,The CM announced nothing new in her budget that has not been alluded to before. We were expecting relief in terms of high electricity and water subsidies. This is an anti-people budget.
