In the latest flashpoint between the Centre and the Delhi government, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging him to “not stop the Delhi Budget”. The Bharatiya Janata Party, on its part, called out Kejriwal for “cheap publicity”, stating that the allegations were part of a “planned conspiracy to defame the PM”.
“This is the first time in the country’s 75-year history that a state budget has been stalled, why are you so angry with the people of Delhi? Please don’t stall Delhi’s Budget, the people of Delhi request you with folded hands to let their Budget be approved,” Kejriwal wrote in his letter to the PM.
The Delhi Budget was to be presented in the Assembly on Tuesday, but was “stopped”, as claimed by Kejriwal, by the Centre. His comments, made during an event organised by a TV channel, sparked a war of allegations between the AAP government, Ministry of Home Affairs and the Lieutenant-Governor’s office. The MHA has said that the L-G had raised concerns over the “administrative nature on the propose Budget” and requested the Delhi government to resubmit the Budget. The ministry added that the reply from Delhi government “is awaited for the last four days”.
Reacting to Kejriwal’s allegations, the BJP Tuesday said, “Why did the Delhi government sit on the file regarding the Budget for three days? Why did CM Arvind Kejriwal choose a television news channel to tell this lie instead of utilising the floor of the Assembly when it is in session? All this has been done as per a planned conspiracy to defame the Prime Minister”.
“Kejriwal should answer how many times he met officials over Budget preparations. Did he even have a word with the Speaker?” Delhi BJP working president Virendra Sachdeva said.
