Delhi airport flight delays continue. Here’s what went wrong

Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport were severely hit on Friday due to a technical glitch in the Air Traffic Control system’s AMSS, causing major delays across airlines and revised flight schedules.

Flight delays at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport continued till late afternoon on Friday. The Delhi airport released a statement around 1:45 PM, asking passengers to adhere to their revised schedules.

Major airlines like SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Air India advised flyers in the morning to keep checking the latest updates and approach their personnel in case of any difficulty.

“Flight operations at Delhi Airport has been disrupted due to an ongoing technical issue with the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS) that supports Air Traffic Control flight planning process. All airline operations at Delhi Airport are currently delayed. Concerned authorities are working on resolving the issue at the earliest. Passengers are requested to follow updates from their airlines regarding revised schedules. Thank you for your cooperation,” the Delhi airport said in its latest statement.

What is AMSS?

The AMSS is a state-of-the-art computerised message switching system. It helps in the exchange of operationally important air safety-related messages between airports, such as flight plan, departure and arrival of the aircrafts.

A glitch in the AMSS resulted in failure of data transmission to the ATC operators’ screens. This means all flight data are having to be compiled manually by the operators, resulting in the delays.

How the system works

The ATC is responsible for the movement of the aircraft during launch and landing. It is also responsible for planning flight movement using flight tracking systems and ensuring that aircraft do not have high waiting periods for landing and take off.

All this is crucial for the ground crew’s preparation as well. All this is made possible by the AMSS, which is the link between airlines, flights, and the ATC. The automated system transmits messages that help coordinate aircraft movements and plan delays for takeoffs/landings on runway.

Hundreds of flights have been delayed so far at the Delhi airport since Thursday due to the AMSS failure. The delays resulted in the queues of passengers swelling outside the airport.
