Defence Colony heist: Man held in West Bengal,Rs 49 lakh recovered

Another prime accused in the Defency Colony multi-crore heist case — Ranjeet alias Rumal — was arrested from Kolkata,police said on Tuesday.

“He had planned to start a small shop and he hired a property agent for Rs 1 lakh. He was offered a shop for Rs 7.55 lakh and he even got the shop registered in his name with the money he had robbed. The documents have been seized,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Chhaya Sharma said.

In the second week of October,police found out that Ranjeet had escaped to West Bengal with his family. A police team went to West Bengal and carried out an intensive search in Murshidabad and Behrampur.

They found Ranjeet’s brother-in-law’s house in Behrampur. Two days before the team reached the house,Ranjeet had left with his wife and children after a fight with his brother-in-law,police said.

The police team arrested him near Hardev Nagar in Kolkata. Ranjeet,a school dropout,was earlier involved in cases of petty theft. “He was once arrested for robbery and was released from jail in 2011. He met with the mastermind of the Defence Colony robbery,Hari Kishan,and joined him,” Sharma said.

Police have recovered Rs 49 lakh and jewellery worth Rs 2.25 lakh from him.
