The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the death sentence of two convicts in the 2012 Delhi gangrape case, after observing that the execution of other convicts in the case had also been put on hold pending their appeals.
The court stayed the sentencing of Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur and noted that the case would be placed before a three-judge bench for a decision on their appeals. In May, the court had stayed the the death sentence of other two convicts, Mukesh Singh and Pawan Gupta, after they had challenged the conviction and the punishment.
A 23-year-old physiotherapy student was gangraped by six men aboard a moving bus on December 16, 2012. A trial court held all four guilty and awarded them death penalty, after charging them with murder, attempt to murder, gangrape, kidnapping and unnatural acts. In March, the Delhi High Court had upheld the death sentence.
While the fifth accused, Ram Singh, was found hanging in his cell in Tihar jail, the sixth convict, a juvenile, was sent to a correction home for three years — the maximum punishment under the Juvenile Justice Act.
