A 40-year-old woman was found dead in a park in Northwest Delhi’s Bharat Nagar area on Sunday morning. According to police,it appeared that her head had been smashed with a stone and that she had died of excessive bleeding.

The body was spotted by a passerby who made a PCR call, police said.

Police initially suspected sexual assault but ruled it out after the initial post-mortem report came through. A case of murder has been registered against unknown persons, police said.

Police said the woman,Kamlesh is a resident of Rajpura,Gurmandi, who was working as a domestic help in the area to support her three children and husband, who is unemployed. On Saturday night, she left for her house from her mother’s place, where she had gone for dinner. Police said she did not reach home that night, and her body was found in the Ramlila Park the next morning. Apart from head injuries, she had also sustained injuries on her chest and abdomen.

Following the incident, the people living in the area gathered to protest against police for being lax and not providing security to the women in the area. The protesters refused to cremate the body and kept it in the middle of the road in Rana Pratap Bagh, demanding immediate arrest of the accused. They also alleged that police were trying to pass on a case of sexual assault as that of murder.

More than 12 police officers, including a woman officer sustained injuries as the protesters turned violent. More than 200 people, including some members of the Aam Aadmi Party, blocked the main road leading to Northwest Delhi, while shouting slogans against police.

The protest threw traffic out of gear for over three hours.

A senior police officer said,“Even when police requested them to clear the area, they refused to disperse and started pelting stones at police vehicles. More than 12 officers have sustained injuries. While five of them sustained fractures,a woman police official suffered a serious head injury. We had to call in extra force to control the situation.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northwest) Ganasabandan said,“We have arrested 18 persons and registered a case of rioting at Model Town police station. The protest turned violent after the protester started pelting stones and damaged two police vehicles. We had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the protesters.”
