A 24-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead by two unidentified bike-borne assailants in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras Saturday. The victim was identified as Kalpita Sharma, the daughter of Hathras District Magistrate Rahul Pandey’s driver Rakesh Kumar Sharma. The shooting took place at the Sadar tehsil area on Saturday, as the woman and her mother were returning home on a scooter after shopping, said the police.

“The attackers stopped their bike right in front of us and shot my daughter. Our scooter fell. My daughter died on the spot,” Kalpita’s mother told the police.

The mother claimed the killing was orchestrated by her daughter-in-law, Jyoti Sharma, and the man who shot her daughter dead bullet was Jyoti’s lover. She alleged that her daughter-in-law’s lover had stolen a revolver from their house two days ago. Her son married Jyoti Sharma over two years ago, and there was an ongoing domestic dispute, she said.

Police sources also said there had been a long-standing dispute in the family of the Hathras DM’s driver. A court case related to the matter was reportedly in its final stages.

“The mother of the deceased alleged that Jyoti Sharma’s lover was behind the attack. An FIR has been lodged naming her. The alleged shooter is currently absconding, but search operations are underway,” an officer said.

Senior Superintendent of Police Chiranjeev Nath Sinha confirmed that the mother of the deceased was an eyewitness and that the police recorded her statement. “The DM’s driver’s wife and daughter were going home when a motorcycle came and the rider opened fire on the girl. She died on the spot. Her mother identified the attacker as someone known to the family and said he had a dispute with the victim,” said Sinha.
