A plan has been mooted by Central Public Works Department (CPWD) to construct a path via underpasses under the Geeta Colony Bridge which will provide uninterrupted connectivity from Raj Ghat to Vijay Ghat in New Delhi.
Officials said the path will allow visitors to walk across all the memorials along the stretch and facilitate VIP movement once the construction of the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal,a common memorial site for conducting last rites of senior national leaders,is completed.
This path will pass through existing underpasses between Shanti Van and Vijay Ghat that were constructed under the Geeta Colony bridge in 2009.
While there is a path going from Rajghat (memorial for Mahatma Gandhi) to Shanti Van,it is not connected in places. We have now proposed the construction a proper path from Raj Ghat till Vijay Ghat, which will go through three underpasses under Geeta Colony, a CPWD official said.
Visitors tend to get lost once they enter any one of the memorials. To ensure that they can access the area without any trouble,a proper path will be created. Along with the path,a road will be created so that people can either walk or travel in a vehicle, a CPWD official said.
The proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Urban Development for financial sanction.
At a later stage,a small vehicle might be provided to make the journey. This path will also facilitate VIP movement once Rashtriya Smriti Shtal is ready, an official said.
In the face of shrinking land resources in the city,CPWD has planned to construct a common memorial site or Rashtriya Smriti Shtal for conducting last rites of senior national leaders instead of having separate samadhis for them.
According to CPWD,the common memorial site will be constructed in Ekta Sthal, located between Shanti Van and Vijay Ghat, and along Rajghat.
Since parking is available at Shanti Van,once Rashtriya Smriti Sthal is ready, the path will be used for people to travel from Shanti Van to Ekta Sthal, a CPWD official said.
It has been proposed that the cremation of Presidents,Vice-Presidents and Prime Ministers be carried out at Rashtriya Smriti Sthal on a common platform. A stone plaque with encryptions of the date of birth and death of the leader will be placed along the area so people can pay their tributes to the leaders, the official said.
