Investigation into the firing inside a courtroom at the Karkardooma District Court last week has revealed the involvement of two more persons, said sources in the police. Investigators said the duo had helped the four juveniles conduct a recce and were present at the premises during the attack, which led to the death of a constable.
Source said the duo drove the juveniles to the premises and one of them accompanied all four to court room number 73 to attack “high-risk undertrial” Irfan alias Cheenu Pehlwan. They have been captured on CCTV cameras at the court, added the sources.
The attack took place on December 23 when Irfan was being produced in court. The juveniles fired 10 rounds in 25 seconds, injuring Irfan. However, head constable Ram Kunwar Meena was shot dead. All four were nabbed as they tried to flee and their weapons seized.
Police sources had said the shooting was the result of a fallout between the gangs of Abdul Nasir alias Khyber Hayat and Irfan. The juveniles claimed they were recruited by Nasir, said sources. Nasir is in jail and his gang operates in the Northeast region of the city, said the source.
Sources said one of the juvenile’s brother is behind bars in a murder case.
The brother and Nasir were once lodged in the same cell at Tihar, where they had planned to eliminate Irfan. Recently, Nasir also met Shakti Naidu, an alleged gangster of southeast Delhi, at Patiala House court in October where Nasir had asked about “supari” killers, added the source.
Sources said the juveniles have been sent to correctional homes for now but said police will soon move the court to get their custody in order to question them further. They will be confronted with Nasir and the juvenile’s brother while in police custody, said a source.
A senior police officer said, “We are trying to make the connections between all the accused and Nasir. More arrests will be made soon.”
