THE country’s first Indian National Defence University (INDU) will be set up at Binola village in Haryana’s Gurgaon district. The state government said it has acquired land for the project. The foundation stone of the university will be laid by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on May 23.
The university,to be built at a cost of Rs 300 crore in a 200-acre plot,will provide a holistic study of the defence and strategic challenges. Binola village was chosen for the varsity by the Haryana government due to its proximity to the national capital.
“It is expected that a large number of students from the country and foreign security forces and civilian officials will undergo various training programmes and courses at INDU every year. One-third students of the university will be civilians,” a state government spokesperson said.
The Education Consultants of India Ltd,a public sector enterprise set up by Ministry of Human Resources Development,has been appointed by Ministry of Defence as consultant and will draft Detailed Project Report,layout plan and INDU Act and Statutes.
“The proposed university would be fully autonomous and constituted under an Act of Parliament. It would promote policy-oriented research on all aspects of national security as part of the strategic national policy-making. The university will facilitate courses in post-graduate (MSc/ MTech),Master in Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctorate (PhD) in the disciplines of defence studies,defence management and defence science and technology,” the spokesperson said.
