Seven persons were arrested on Monday for attacking policemen and vadalising police vehicles in Outer Delhi’s Narela area. Police officers said the incident, reported on Sunday night, left at least 10 policemen injured. Five police vehicles were also vandalised in the attack.
Police said the attackers accused them of shielding persons involved in a sex racket.
“In a PCR call around 9.30 pm, a caller claimed that a sex racket was being run from Sector-10, Narela. When police teams reached the spot, they found people agitating outside a house in which two women and two men had locked themselves. Those agitating claimed that the four were involved in a prostitution racket. The four youths, however, denied the accusation and claimed that they were friends who had met up. They had locked themselves inside the house for fear of being attacked. Police decided to take away the four to police station for questioning,” a senior officer said.
However, residents of the area gathered there and began agitating, accusing police of shielding the four persons. They also alleged that the four were running the sex racket in connivance with police.
Soon, the situation turned violent and the people began pelting stones at police personnel.
At least 10 police personnel were injured. The Station House Officer had his hand fractured, police said. Some of them damaged five police vehicles on standby, an officer said.
Police rushed in additional forces from nearby police stations to bring the situation under control. Later, a case of rioting was registered against unidentified persons, police said.
