A 25-year-old commando of the Delhi Police died after his AK-47 went off accidentally while he was checking it in Vasant Vihar on Sunday.
The police said the incident occurred around 8 am,when the victim, identified as Anil Kumar, was checking his weapon before handing it over to another constable near Hotel Vasant Continental.
Kumar,a native of Rewari in Haryana, was deployed with Vajra, the Delhi Polices riot control vehicle.
He was handing the gun to his colleague as his duty was getting over. He was posted at India Gate in the night and their vehicle had gone to change duty at Vasant Vihar, where the mishap occurred, the police said.
The gun went off accidentally,an officer said, adding that three bullets were fired. Two hit him in the stomach while the third hit his hand, the officer said.
The police said Kumars body has been sent for a postmortem and his fellow police officers are being questioned about the incident.
Sundays incident has raised questions on the handling of hi-tech weapons by the Delhi Police. The AK-47 is one of the most successful weapons in the World. It is possible that personnel might not have been adequately trained before being armed with such a sophisticated weapon, a senior police officer said.
The police said the case is being probed properly and an internal inquiry into what happened exactly will be initiated in the matter.
On March 17,a 25-year-old man was shot at by a Delhi Police constable in another case of accidental firing in the Seemapuri area of Northeast Delhi. Ritesh was hit on the head after Constable Shakti Singhs gun went off accidentally.
