The Transport department will be sending out a public notice directing owners of contract carriage buses and Gramin Sewa vehicles to install GPS devices in their vehicles.
The notice, which is expected to be issued on Tuesday, gives bus owners a deadline of April 30 to install GPS devices. The Gramin Sewa vehicle owners have till May 31.
Officials said action will be initiated against those who do not comply with the order by the deadline.
The Special Task Force, headed by Union Home Secretary, constituted to look into the safety issues of women in the capital had instructed Delhi government to install GPS devices in all public vehicles. The directions came in the wake of the December 16 gangrape of a 23-year-old woman in a moving bus.
We have asked contract carriage buses, including school buses,to install GPS devices by April 30,and have given Gramin Sewa vehicle owners to install it by May 31, Transport Commissioner Puneet Goel said.
The permits for these vehicles are issued permits by the Transport department, and officials said failure to adhere to the directions would invite action for violation of permit conditions.
The vehicle owners can get GPS devices installed from any vendor, who is registered with Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System. A list of five such vendors will be provided in the public notice, which will be published by Tuesday. More GPS suppliers will be registered in the coming days. This will help make public transport safer in the city a Transport official said.
