Just a few hours ahead of the nomination of the corporations Mayor, the deputy Mayor, and the chairperson and deputy chairperson of the standing committee, the fight for these posts in South Municipal Corporation has grown intense with the Congress trying to get the support of the independent member in the BJP-led local body.
With three of the BJP councillors out of the standing committee, the Congress is now targeting posts in the body, party sources said.
The councillors were removed during a process in which half of the members elected through the House are eliminated.
Currently, the standing committee has six members elected through the House,of whom two are from the Congress, and four elected from ward committees,of whom one is an NCP leader. The committee also has an independent member.
The Congress is aiming to get one member elected through the House and the independent member on its side. If successful, the Congress and the NCP will together hold three posts in the committee.
The situation is tough. If the Congress is be able to garner the required support,it will lead to a tie between BJP and the Congress in the standing committee, a senior councillor said.
Senior Congress leaders also claim that the party is less interested in the posts of the Mayor and the deputy Mayor, and is focussing its energies on the standing committee.
Posts in the standing committee are the most coveted in the corporation,as every issue has to pass through the committee before it is put up in the House, a senior Congress councillor said.
