After dropping Delhi Congress Chief Arvinder Singh Lovely for the Assembly election scheduled for February 7, the Congress has now nominated block president Surender Prakash Sharma from the Gandhi Nagar seat.
“Sharma is a very close associate of Lovely. But initially, the DPCC president had wanted the seat to go to his wife and had floated the idea that she campaign in Gandhi Nagar, while he takes care of the entire organisation. But the high command felt that such a move would send a wrong signal,” a senior Congress leader said.
The announcement of Sharma’s candidature was made by senior Congress leader and Delhi in-charge P C Chacko. The Pradesh Congress chief has been asked to take up organisational responsibilities of the party.
The party also announced that Meenakshi Chandila will be its candidate for the Rajouri Garden seat in place of Dhanwati Chandila.

Chandila is the wife of former MLA Dyanand Chandila and Meenakshi is their daughter-in-law. “The Chandila family is very powerful in Rajouri Garden. It was very surprising when they lost the previous elections. It was felt that Meenakshi, who is a fresh face, will be able to draw votes against the sitting MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who has a strong following among the youth,” the leader said.
