In their first meeting with Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, the newly elected MLAs blamed the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) for the party’s drubbing in the Delhi Assembly election.

“Rahul was informed of the resentment of the MLAs over an evident lack of support from the DPCC this election,” a source said.

The eight legislators — Prahlad Singh Sawhney,Chaudhary Mateen Ahmed,Asif Mohd Khan,Haroon Yusuf,Arvinder Singh Lovely,Hassan Ahmed,Jai Kishen and Devender Yadav – met Rahul Gandhi at his residence on Thursday to analyse the party’s poor performance in the election.

Rahul was informed that the DPCC maintained a distance from the election campaign, which made the candidates “feel that it wanted its candidates to lose”. AICC General Secretary in-charge of Delhi, Shakeel Ahmed, was present at the review meeting.

Chandni Chowk MLA Prahlad Singh Sawhney said while discussing Congress’s routing, the AAP’s success was also evaluated.

Former minister in Dikshit government and Ballimaran MLA Haroon Yusuf blamed the AAP for Congress’s loss. “Kejriwal promised the skies and people got carried away by that,” he said.

In the meeting that lasted for over an hour, the legislators reviewed why a government of 15 years was unable to carry its message to the masses.

“Dikshit did so much for this city. But we were unable to carry that message to the voters. This is what we primarily reviewed in the meeting,” Yousuf said.

Although the Congress vice-president did not provide any assurances to the legislators at the meeting, changes in the DPCC seems likely to follow. A decision to strengthen the party cadre and give the ground worker “his due credit” was taken at the meeting.
