Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Thursday said 14 other proposed bus rapid transport (BRT) corridors, which were to come up in different locations in the city, have been put on hold.
This comes after the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) submitted a report to the Delhi High Court on Monday on the existing BRT corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand, suggesting a non-BRT solution to decongest the stretch.
The High Court has allowed the government time till July 23 to study the report and file its response.
We are not going to implement the other 14 BRT corridors for the time being. We want to study the CRRI report properly before taking a decision to go ahead with the other corridors. We have sought time from the Delhi High Court for this, Dikshit said.
The 203-page CRRI report says cars take 13-16 minutes more to cross the 5.8-km long BRT corridor between Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand, wasting fuel worth Rs 2.48 crore every year.
There was resistance when the BRT corridor along Ambedkar Nagar and Moolchand was introduced. But when people saw the advantages, they were in favour of it. But now there are again voices against this project. We will have to take into consideration every angle before taking a decision [on future projects, the Chief Minister said.
Of the 14 proposed projects,a detailed report for the Karawal Nagar-Shastri Park corridor in East Delhi has already been made, while the file was sent to the government for financial clearance, sources said.
Some work has been taken up in the Karawal Nagar corridor because the area is different and cannot be compared to the Ambedkar Nagar-Moochand BRT stretch, Dikshit said.
Sources said the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS), which manages the Ambedkar Nagar corridor, has been entrusted with the Karawal Nagar project.
DIMTS has six other corridors to build - Dhaula Kuan to Chawla,Badarpur to Airport,ISBT Kashmere Gate to Dilshad Garden,Gandhi Nagar to Chilla,Kondli to Mukunpur and Gokulpuri to Karkari Mor. Preliminary project reports have been made for all these corridors.
The PWD has seven proposed corridors in its kitty, with the 29-km Mukundpur to Palam More being the longest.
The others are ISBT Kashmere Gate to Shahi Idgah,Mundka Tikri Border (old Rohtak Road,NH-10),Sarai Kale Khan to Jor Bagh (via Barapullah Nullah),National Stadium to Ghazipur,Narela to Azadpur,ISBT Anand Vihar to Connaught Place and Kirbi Place to Tilak Nagar.
