The price of compressed natural gas (CNG) in the capital was hiked on Thursday by Rs 4.50 per kg,the second increase in three months. The price of cooking gas piped to kitchens has been increased by Rs 2 per kg with effect from Thursday midnight.

After the hike,CNG will cost Rs 50.10 per kg in Delhi and Rs 56.70 per kg in Noida,Greater Noida and Ghaziabad from midnight,a statement released by Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL) said.

The IGL statement attributed the hike to increase in input costs.

However,Arvind Kejriwal, set to be sworn in as Delhi’s next chief minister on Saturday, was quick to question the timing of the hike.

He tweeted,“CNG rates hiked in Delhi. Isn’t the time suspect?”

One of the poll planks for the Aam Aadmi Party, which will form the government with Congress support, was to fight the rising costs for the residents of Delhi.

Party sources said,“There was no need to hike the prices again. This was done only to make the AAP government’s job harder. However, this will not deter us from taking strong steps against price rise.”

The price of piped natural gas (PNG) to households in Delhi is being revised from Rs 27.50 per standard cubic metre to Rs 29.50 per scm up to consumption of 30 scm in two months. Beyond that, the rate in Delhi would be Rs 52 per scm.
