CM’s 40-minute task takes three long hours

If there was any doubt over whether the Delhi government is in a rush to complete its infrastructure obligations before the Commonwealth Games,Sheila Dikshit’s schedule for Wednesday would have put them to rest. The CM was supposed to inaugurate four foot overbridges (FOB) across the Capital,in 40 minutes. But thanks to a sudden downpour, and the resultant traffic jams all over the city, the task took nearly three hours. The traffic was so bad that the CM could not even make it to one of the planned inaugurations at Hauz Rani.

According to the schedule,Dikshit was to inaugurate the first FOB at Pragati Maidan at 6 pm. However,at 6 pm in her Motilal Nehru Marg residence, with no sign of Dikshit her staff appeared tense. “Madam’s previous meeting is running late,” a staff member explained. A quick string of calls later,it emerged that the CM had decided to go straight from her meeting at North Block to Pragati Maidan. Within 30 seconds, her team had jumped into cars, and sirens blazing, started driving towards the spot. A quick ribbon cutting at the state-of-the-art FOB,and several handshakes later, the CM was off to the next spot. The first of the inaugurations was well within schedule and was wrapped up by 6.15 pm.

Despite the rain, the CM’s cavalcade got to FOB No 2 near Bala Saheb Gurdwara on Outer Ring Road by 6.30 pm. Accompanied by PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, son and East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit, and others, the CM spent about 10 minutes examining the FOB. Incidentally, many who leaned against the railing of the FOB walked away with stripes of fresh paint on their backs, apparently the work was completed just before the CM’s arrival.

At 6.40 pm,the CM left for the third inauguration at Hauz Rani, but found herself in the middle of a traffic jam close to Moolchand. Despite all the red sirens, the CM’s cavalcade barely inched forward. When the traffic showed no signs of dissipating by 7.15 pm,a slew of traffic cops manoeuvred the traffic to allow the CM to turn towards the Jungpura Road and return to Pragati Maidan.
