On the occasion of Labour Day,which falls on May 1,Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit will launch a toll-free ‘Shramik Helpline’ aimed at combating child labour and handling complaints from workers. Described as a first-of-its-kind initiative, the helpline number 12789 will be functional between 7 am and 8 pm initially, the Delhi government said on Tuesday.

“The helpline is being commissioned to provide a sense of confidence and assurance to workers and make it an effective tool for approaching the authorities in case of denial of the minimum wages by the employers and (for) enforcement of all labour laws,” a statement from the government read.

In case of a call regarding child labour, the Labour department will ensure that the child is rescued.

The department will employ a senior officer to manage the helpline. “The employees will submit the details to the officers concerned for action. A report, after every six hours, will be sent to the Labour Secretary. The Minister of Labour will chair a review meeting on a fortnight basis,” the statement said.

Labour Minister Ramakant Goswami said wide consultation had been taken up before commissioning of the helpline,“which is going to be the first” in India.
