A Class IX student of a private school in southwest Delhi’s Chhawla area was brutally beaten to death with wooden sticks, allegedly by two of his classmates, after he complained to teachers that they were misbehaving in class.
Police said the duo used a rock to bash the boy’s head. Both juveniles have been apprehended.
The victim has been identified as Shubham Jindal. Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) (southwestern range) Dependra Pathak said the juveniles, who are cousins, were jealous of Shubham after he was made the class monitor.
“The incident came to light on Sunday around 11.30 pm. The victim’s father approached police and informed them that his 14-year-old son had not returned home. Police immediately registered a case of kidnapping and several teams were formed to trace the boy,” Pathak said.
Four hours later, police found Shubham’s body lying next to his bicycle near a crematorium — 500 metres away from his home in Roshan Nagar.
Pathak said their investigation revealed that the victim was last seen along with two of his classmates.
“A police team later went to the homes of both juveniles and found out that they had left for their grandfather’s house in Haryana. While the body was sent for an autopsy, another police team was sent to the Haryana town from where the boys were apprehended,” Pathak said.
Police questioned both juveniles and found out that one of them was upset with Shubham after he was made the class monitor.
“A few weeks ago, he was made the class monitor and was told to mind a noisy class. Shubham had complained to the teacher about one of the juveniles. The teacher scolded the boy and called his mother, who slapped him in front of other students,” a senior police officer said.
Police said the boys were waiting for an opportunity to teach Shubham a lesson.
On Sunday evening, they had a heated argument.
“They threatened Shubham for the way he behaved in class. They challenged him to a cycle race till a local crematorium to prove his athletic skills. Shubham won the race. Rattled by this, one of the juveniles hit Shubham on the head with a stick. His cousin joined him and both beat up Shubham before smashing his head with a rock lying by the roadside. They then fled the spot,” the officer said.
Shubham’s father, Anil Jindal, has blamed the school administration for Shubham’s death.
“I was upset after my child was made class monitor. I had even requested the school principal to remove my child from the post, but they did not do so. They are the real culprits and action should be taken against them.”
Shubham was the only child of his parents, police said.
