The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has blamed Delhi Police for animals finding their way to “illegal” slaughter houses in Paharganj’s Qasabpura from Ghazipur on the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border.
In a public interest litigation seeking closure of the illegal slaughter houses, the North municipal corporation alleged that residents of Qasabpura brought the animals at night and slaughtered them at “their residential premises”.
It said its veterinary services department carried out 24 “surprise inspections” in the area at night and took action against those operating illegal slaughterhouses. It said the main slaughterhouse in the area had been shut and shifted to Ghazipur. The corporation said over Rs 4.6 lakh was collected in fines from defaulters and four premises sealed.
But the affidavit added that the area was “sensitive” and that its veterinary services department needed police cooperation. “The Qasabpura area is very sensitive from the point of view of law and order. Corporation officials cannot enter the locality without police protection,” it said.
The corporation said the “nuisance” of illegal slaughtering could be stopped “if the Delhi Police put pickets on all entry points to Qasabpura and does not allow transportation of animals to the locality”.
It said it was the responsibility of the police and the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to prevent smuggling of animals to the slaughter houses at night.
