Civic bodies want CAG audit to look into ‘lack of funds’ to fight dengue

While welcoming the decision of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) to undertake an audit on the preparedness of the Delhi government and local authorities to deal with mosquito-borne diseases, the municipal corporations took pot shots at the government.

The civic body suggested that the audit should also take into account the “holding back of funds” — approximately Rs 700 crore — by the Delhi government, in accordance with the Fourth Delhi Finance Commission’s recommendations.

The corporations have claimed that the recurring financial crisis faced by the corporations was a result of this.

North corporation standing committee chairman, Mohan Prasad Bhardwaj, on Saturday said, “The audit should also include the non-release of Rs 700 crore for municipal corporations… and the specified funds for anti-malaria operations, during the current year by the government.”

The corporations alleged that funds were released to them a day ahead of a court hearing on anti-dengue measures.

They have also refuted the government’s claim that it had released 75 per cent of funds earmarked for the corporations.

The CAG audit will look into preventive steps taken by the government, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the three municipal corporations in dealing with vector-borne diseases.

According to sources, the audit will be carried out by four teams of four officials each. The report is expected in the next five months.
