City to get 36 new govt schools by Aug

Delhi Minister for Education Kiran Walia on Friday announced the opening of 36 new schools in the capital by August-end.

Delhi Minister for Education Kiran Walia on Friday announced the opening of 36 new schools in the capital by August-end. The move also aims to improve infrastructure in government schools.

Walia made this announcement at a function where Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit announced scholarships for students who have topped in government schools.

Walia said: “This year,Delhi government schools results were the best in the country, even though they lacked infrastructure. We do not want infrastructure to come in the way of performance. We will ensure that all schools have basic facilities before they re-open after vacations.

“In addition,36 new government schools will be opened in the capital and 2,000 new rooms will be added to the existing ones. We have recognised 1,000 sites for the new schools and boundary demarcation has been done in more than 50 per cent of them. We also plan to regularise the appointment of 1,000-odd contractual school teachers by end of August,” she said.

Taking a cue from the HRD Ministry, which had announced a cash reward of

Rs 1 lakh for each of the 200 CBSE Class XII toppers last month,Dikshit announced a scholarship of Rs 50,000 for all Delhi school toppers.

The five toppers — Ankit Saini (Commerce),Lalit Lakra (Science),Taruna (vocational),Diksha & Momina (Humanities) — were felicitated at the function.
