The Delhi Police has drawn up a slew of measures for the safety of people, especially students, from the north-eastern states residing in the city.
In a first,it will launch a website — delhipolicefornortheast.com — to help the community put forth their grievances and suggestions. This is one of the points of an order issued by Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar.
The order was issued in the wake of growing incidents of crime — assault, molestation and other atrocities in the Capital — against students and professionals from the Northeast.
Police officers have been asked to take prompt action in cases involving people from the Northeast. Any laxity in investigation or delay in attending to such cases would go against the officer(s) concerned, sources said.
“If there is any complaint regarding any cognisable offence like harassment against women, stalking, unacceptable text messages to a person from the Northeast and prompt action is not taken, then a serious view shall be taken against the police officer concerned,” the order said.
To overcome the language barrier, five to seven representatives from each north-eastern state will be appointed to act as interface between the complainant and police. These persons will be fluent in English and effectively communicate the grievances to police.
They will be hired to work for one year in consultation with heads and representatives of students’ unions and employees’ associations of people from the Northeast living in Delhi, the order states.
Additional CPs and DCPs of all districts will act as nodal officers to interact with the people from the Northeast living in the area.
A JCP-rank officer, who is well-versed with the culture and custom of various communities from the Northeast, will be appointed as chief coordinator. He will review the performance of police officers and the people’s representatives.
The nodal officers have been asked to convene monthly meetings with students and people from the Northeast. Station house officers (SHO) in areas having sizeable population of north-eastern people have been told to be extra vigilant.
The Joint Commissioner of Police (Training) will hold behavioural training s for all officers as part of their service drill. People from the Northeast, who have encountered some crime or atrocity in the city, will be invited to interact with the police officers during the training programme.
