Designer clothes,high-end handbags and diamond-studded jewellery added glamour to the oath-taking ceremony of the South Municipal Corporation on Wednesday.

Designer clothes,high-end handbags and diamond-studded jewellery added glamour to the oath-taking ceremony of the South Municipal Corporation on Wednesday.

Many of the 104 councillors made heads turn when they turned up for the ceremony.

Anju Sehwag,Congress councillor from Dakshinpuri Extension and sister of cricketer Virender Sehwag,had a new hairstyle and trendy shades.

BJP’s Sarita Chaudhary,councillor from Sangam Vihar,was dressed in black animal-print saree.

“It is our first day in the South corporation. Many of us have been elected for the first time. Everyone wants to look presentable during the oath ceremony. We have put in so much hard work to get elected,we deserve to be dressed today,” said a group of councillors after the ceremony.

BJP councillor Ankita Saini from Hauz Khas took her oath in English,as did 10 other councillors.

For Neelam,Independent councillor from Dichaon Kala,‘allegiance’ became ‘allegation’ during the speech.

BJP councillor Radhika Setia from Nagal Raya,BJP councillor Ritu Vohra from Tilak Nagar,Congress councillor Anju Gupta from Mohan Garden,BJP councillor M Nagrajan from Pushp Vihar and NCP councillor Timshi Kasana from Molarband also took their oaths in English.

“The oath is permissible in Hindi,English,Sanskrit,Urdu and Punjabi. We can choose to speak in any language we feel comfortable with. Most of the councillors here are educated and they chose to take the oath in English,” said Ritu Vohra.

The South corporation also has several ‘crorepatis’,like billionaire councillor Satwinder Kaur Sirsa who along with her husband owns assets worth Rs 100 crore.

Meghraj and Meenakashi Chandila jointly own assets worth Rs 6.5 crore.

Congress councillor Abhishek Dutt from Andrews Ganj is an entrepreneur while Independent councillor Naresh Balyan from Nawada runs a chain of hotels.
