Chased by policemen, armed men hide in Ghaziabad high-rise,cops lock it down

A high-rise residential complex in Govindpuram,Ghaziabad, was cordoned off by police on Monday after three armed men ran into the complex to shake off the two police constables who had been chasing them.

A high-rise residential complex in Govindpuram,Ghaziabad, was cordoned off by police on Monday after three armed men ran into the complex to shake off the two police constables who had been chasing them.

Police were conducting searches inside the 900-unit residential complex — Gaur Homes — till late night in an attempt to nab the men who had also opened fire at the constables.

According to police,Constables Pradeep and Satbir, who were doing the rounds of the area, stopped their motorcycle near a Hyundai Verna car around 4.30 pm. The three men inside the car, police said, caught the eye of the constables as one of the occupants seemed injured.

“There were three people in the car who were carrying arms. One of them also seemed injured, with wounds on his ears and head. Constables Pradeep and Satbir asked them for vehicle registration papers and their details,” Superintendent of Police (City) S S Yadav said.

The men, police said, got scared when they were questioned. They got out of the car and fled on foot.

“In an attempt to flee, they shot two rounds at the constables who were chasing them. Both shots missed their target. Then, one of the three ran off in a different direction while two stayed together. Our constables had to maintain some distance because the men were armed,” Yadav said.

The two men accosted an auto-driver,Mahavir,and boarded his vehicle at gunpoint, police said.

“They pointed the gun to my temple and told me to drive as fast as I could or they would kill me. When I reached the gates of the Gaur Homes complex, they jumped off and ran inside. The two policemen followed the men,” Mahavir said.

According to police, the two men disappeared into the basement parking area of the residential complex.

“We cordoned off the area and began a search. No shots were fired inside the complex. Many residents stepped out of their homes on hearing the commotion. We also had to deal with panicked residents,” Yadav said.

Police said they have recovered the Hyundai Verna car used by the men.

“The car has a sticker of the Gaur City residential complex. The number belongs to Shajahanpur district. Search operations are in progress. Personnel have been instructed to look at possible hiding spots in the parking area and even inside flats. We are trying to trace the owner of the car,and hope to zero in on the men through the owner. A police cordon has been enforced in the complex. It is possible that the men slipped out through one of the many exits of the complex,” Yadav said.

Sohini Singh,a resident of Gaur Homes, said: “It all happened very quickly. I was cooking at home when I heard the gunshots. I looked out of the window and saw two men running into our colony basement with guns. Two policemen were chasing them. Soon after, police arrived in huge number and cordoned off the area. I left the complex with my son, fearing for my safety.”
