After the death of a 55-year-old woman following treatment and an operation at a private nursing home in Mangolpuri area in West Delhi, angry relatives stormed the premises, smashed windowpanes and blocked the road outside the nursing home for over an hour. Police officers said the agitation continued from 9.30 am to 4 pm on Wednesday.

The agitation was so fierce that the doctors on duty at the nursing home had to leave the premises through the rear entrance.

Police said the relatives of the deceased alleged that a doctor at the Dhruv Nursing Home in R-Block conducted a wrong operation on the victim,Misru Kumar, which resulted in her death.

“We had taken the lady for an operation for tuberculosis to the nursing home around ten days ago. Doctors at the nursing home conducted the operation and discharged her. Two days later, her condition worsened and we rushed her to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. The doctors over there told us that a kidney stone operation had been conducted instead of a TB operation,” one of the agitators,Mahesh Choudhary, said.

According to the relatives of the deceased, the doctors at the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital told them to get a medical report from Dhruv Nursing Home. However, when they went back to collect the report, the doctors there refused to give them one.

Misru was discharged from Sanjay Gandhi Hospital after three days and taken back home in Nihal Vihar after the doctors there told them that without the earlier medical report,no further treatment could be provided.

“On Wednesday morning, she stopped breathing. We rushed her to the nursing home and demanded an explanation. The doctor on duty, however, spoke to us rudely and told us to get out. The body was in the car,but they refused to even inspect it. They even tried paying us Rs 30,000,” a neighbour,Sonu Jain alleged.

More people joined the agitation later and started shouting slogans and three police jeeps were sent to control the crowd. The protest intensified after police officers took the body in a police tempo to Sanjay Gandhi Mortuary for postmortem. The agitators blocked the road for over an hour around 3 pm and the police had to retort to minor lathicharge to disperse the crowd.

Around eight people have been detained in this regard, including the four sons of the deceased. A senior police officer said charges are being investigated and a rioting case will be registered against the detained.

Authorities at the nursing home could not be reached for comments.
