A day after four persons, including two policemen, were arrested for the abduction and murder of a woman, police said a chance discovery helped them solve the murder, which took place in November 2012.
Ghaziabad police said the arrests of Sub-Inspector Bachu Singh, his son Tarun, Constable Vinesh, one Amarpal and his wife Rashmi took place after they found a photograph of Rashmi, clicked by the murdered woman’s brother.
Ghaziabad police said that the key piece of evidence was recovered from the phone of Rashmi’s younger brother. “It was clicked at the murdered woman’s house by her younger brother. On the basis of this photograph, we conducted a series of searches until we were able to identify her,” Ghaziabad SP Muniraj G said.
Police said while they suspected the involvement of Bachu Singh and his family, they couldn’t find any evidence linking them to the murder. “An FIR was registered under sections pertaining to rape on March 1, 2013 and then another FIR was filed against Bachu Singh and his son Tarun on June 17, 2013. We knew they had motive, but had no evidence in terms of how the crime had been committed,” a senior police officer said.
Police said the discovery of the photograph was important as it allowed them to connect the involvement of Rashmi and her husband Amarpal with the crime. “They had taken steps to ensure that they couldn’t be linked to the crime. Bachu had spoken to constable Vinesh, who in turn had spoken to another constable Rahul. Rahul had contacted Amarpal and his wife,” Muniraj said.
Police said that Bachu Singh kept his communication with Amarpal at an absolute minimum and in exchange for the murder of the deceased woman, Amarpal was given Rs 30,000 in advance and promised a total of Rs 2 lakh.
The police said Bachu Singh had initially attempted to appease the murdered woman and had allegedly paid her a sum of Rs 50,000.
Singh told the police that she later refused to take the money.
“She and Tarun were in a relationship, but when Tarun refused to marry her, she filed FIRs against him and the family,” Muniraj said.
Rashmi, who works as a journalist in Ghaizabad, had befriended the deceased prior to her murder. “Rashmi managed to convince the woman to come to Aligarh on the pretext of a job interview. There, she was killed by the duo on November 30, 2012. She was strangled with a chunni, and her body was dumped into a canal,” a senior police officer said.
