Delhi Police on Friday told a city court that BJP MLA Kulwant Rana was a habitual offender who had multiple cases registered against him. The Rithala MLA was arrested on April 22 on the directions of the court after he failed to appear in response to a summons issued to him in a case of making casteist remarks against a BJP member. The investigating officer told the court that Rana had two cases pending in court and was believed to be involved in more. Rana had approached the court seeking bail after his arrest. Police told the court of Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau that they had not arrested Rana as they feared it would create a law and order problem. The court pulled up the police for double standards and said the police had to show cogent material justifying the apprehension of a law and order problem.
