To tackle Ebola cases, the Delhi government’s Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has received 400 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from the Centre and will indent them to hospitals “as per need”, staff at Lok Nayak (LN) hospital said.
Delhi health secretary SCL Das on Tuesday said staff at LN hospital have also been trained according to WHO protocol on how to wear PPE and what precautions to take for infection control during management of patients and collection of samples.
Sources said an eight-member rapid response team, headed by a nodal officer DHS, was formed for Ebola by the Delhi government, after a meeting convened by the Health department on October 30.
The team includes specialists in medicine, community medicine, paediatricians and microbiologists from Central government and Delhi government hospitals.
“This team is in-charge of the Ebola management in case a single case is identified,” an official said. A seven-member Training of Trainers (TOT) also participated in a training organised by the Union Health Ministry. TOT includes doctors from DHS, Aruna Asaf Ali hospital, Maulana Azad Medical College, LBS, LN, Swami Dayanand and BJRM hospitals.
This team, officials said, will be responsible for training doctors at other identified hospitals.
“LN hospital staff in the three-bed isolation ICU are being trained separately. WHO representatives participated in the meeting and we requested them to inspect both the hospitals. Our state Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) is monitoring patients released from the quarantine facility at Airport Health Organisation (APHO), Delhi, for a 30-day period as mandated by the Centre. So while we should not be complacent because the disease has very high mortality rates, we are following all necessary precautionary measures as per protocol,” Das said.
A control room (011-22307145) has been set up at the DHS office in Karkardooma for Ebola along with an existing Union Health Ministry helpline.
