Putting an end to speculation over whether it would stake claim to government formation,BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Harsh Vardhan on Thursday announced that his party did not have sufficient numbers to do so.

The announcement was made after Harsh Vardhan met Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung on Thursday evening to communicate to him the party’s decision.

While maintaining that the BJP had emerged the single-largest party with 32 seats,Harsh Vardhan said it was still short of four MLAs to make the 36 required to form the government.

“We have principled our party on transparency and honesty. Power is not our ambition… it is to serve the people. People know this and they have voted the Congress out of power because of its bad governance. We have decided to sit in the Opposition and serve the city,” Harsh Vardhan said.

In his letter to the Lt-Governor,Harsh Vardhan stated,“Despite people’s mandate,we do not have a majority. Thus, taking a high moral stand,we have decided to sit in the Opposition.”

With folded hands,he apologised to the residents of Delhi and said circumstances had pushed the party to take the decision. He also maintained that in the event of re-polling,his party should not be blamed.

Further justifying the BJP’s decision,Harsh Vardhan referred to a letter from the President to the Lt-Governor.

“The L-G has received a letter from the President in which he has said that whosoever forms the government will have to prove his majority within a week. And we do not have the majority. The AAP has clarified its stand that it will not take or give support to any party. We do not have any other alternative. I would like to apologise for making the residents of Delhi bear the burden of another poll,” Harsh Vardhan said.
