Citing resource constraints, the Delhi government on Thursday told the Delhi High Court that continued payment of grants-in-aid to the three municipal corporations would have a “cascading effect” on the city’s development.
Maintaining that it had limited resources, the government said it was dependent upon the Centre for funds and, therefore, it “cannot focus only on the corporations as it has to take care of the rest of the city and its people as well”.
Delhi government Additional Standing Counsel Naushad Ahmad Khan made the submissions before the bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath. The bench is hearing two PILs seeking wage payments to East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) employees and cleaning up of the area under the civic body’s jurisdiction.
The PILs were filed after EDMC safai karamcharis went on a strike over non-payment of their salary, leading to heaps of garbage littering several areas and roads of East Delhi.
