Close on the heels of an armed gang waylaying the cash van of a bank and making off with Rs 5.25 crore, after killing one of the guards, robbers broke into the Inderlok branch of the State bank of India in North Delhi’s Sarai Rohilla area on Friday night.

According to police, the robbers removed the exhaust fan installed along the rear wall of the bank, cut the iron grill next to it and gained entry into the bank. Police said the intruders cut off the wires of all the CCTV cameras before entering the bank.

“The break-in took place around 1 pm. But nothing was stolen. The gang probably did not find any money. One of the staff members who reached the branch around 7.30 am saw the bank ransacked and informed the branch manager, who in turn alerted us,” a police officer said.

Incidentally, police said this was the second break -in at the bank branch in the past one-and-a-half years.

“The intruders ransacked the bank, upturned cupboards and pulled out documents, which were strewn all over the floor, before making for the locker. They were probably looking for money and checked every cupboard and drawer in the bank. When they didn’t find any, they tried tampering with the iron locker where the cash is stored, but were unsuccessful,” the officer investigating the case said.

Police said the robbers cut off the wires to the ATM inside the bank and upended it.

“They probably did this to break open the machine, but again, they were unsuccessful,” the officer said.

The bank has eight clerical staff,a deputy manager,an assistant manager and a branch manager.

All staff had left the bank by 7.30 pm on Friday. There was no guard posted at the branch during the night, police said.
