“From coffee and conversations,we are now coffee, alcohol and conversations,” grins Riyaaz Amlani, the 30-something owner of coffee chain,Mocha, who has now diversified into bars, under the name Mocha Bars. With a symbol of a beer pint with wings,Amlani has set-up his first bar,a 900 sq ft watering hole in the Satyam District Centre,Nehru Place. “I always felt that Delhi lacked cheap bars for neighbourhood drinkers. Either you had bars that were too expensive or lounge-bars that were too pretentious. So people who want to enjoy a relaxed drink like we do in Mumbai, had no options,” explains Amlani, also the proprietor of the popular Salt Water Grill in Mumbai. Amlani is aware of the pitfalls of serving cheap alcohol in Delhi; bar brawls are not uncommon here. “Let’s see,we’ll deal with it if it happens,” says Amlani.

Though this bar is pretty tiny, they have a huge bar counter, surrounded by red sofas and spotted bar stools. Inverted wrought iron garden tables painted in blue work as the chandeliers, with dark green drapes to keep out the heat. Good rock music plays throughout the day (it is open from 11 am till 1: 30 am). Somehow,Mocha Bar has a chilled ambience, playful and cheery. “We will screen major sporting events starting with the IPL and rock gigs,” says Amlani. Coffee aficionados need not despair,Mocha Bars offers the whole range of Mocha shakes and coffees. But the bar prides itself in its 19 signature fresh fruit based cocktails. So a strawberry caipiroska (Rs 225) comes with freshly churned pulp and decorated with a wedge of strawberry on the rim of the glass or a water melon mojito (Rs 225) with muddled lime chunks and water melon juice. A Californication (Rs 250) made with freshly churned California plums, vodka and peach liqueur is absolutely delicious. Wile a Ya Maan (Rs 225) with apple, mint and lime is a good thirst quencher. Ideal finger foods to accompany this can be a chicken satay (Rs 210) Moroccan Soy Kababs (Rs 185) with black bean hummus or a honey and mustard glazed chicken panini (Rs 185) served with sour cream.
