A day after the municipal commissioners announced that parking charges will be hiked in the city, the Mayors and the BJP leaders opposed the decision on Thursday. During a courtesy call to Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna, the three Mayors Meera Aggarwal of North,Savita Gupta of South and Annapurna Mishra of East along with Leaders of the House and chairmen of Standing Committees objected to the proposal to increase parking charges.
We have opposed the announcement made by the commissioners on Wednesday. No hike will be introduced in parking charges or any other form of taxes, said Subhash Arya,Leader of the House of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Referring to the idea of encouraging usage of public transport, the Municipal Commissioner of South Manish Gupta on Wednesday announced that parking charges will be increased. The North Corporation Commissioner P K Gupta too supported the idea and said it was the only way to compensate for the high cost of land used for parking.
A delegation of 12 functionaries of the trifurcated corporation met the LG on Thursday.
The BJP leaders also said the commissioners do not have the prerogative to increase any charges or taxes without consulting with the deliberative wing of the civic body, constituting mayors,Leader of the House and other councillors.
Increasing parking charges is a prerogative of the deliberative wing of the corporation and not that of the commissioners. Even if suggestions are invited by the Transport department, they should not make such outright announcement until it has been approved in committee meetings. Such false statements only misguide citizens, said Arya.
