The office of BJP leader Vijay Goel, where grills were removed recently because they looked ugly, was burgled early Monday morning. Cash and valuables were stolen, police said.
The incident took place in Goels office in the Bengali Market area. No watchman or security guard had been hired to keep watch on the office. Moreover,Goel had asked for the grills in the office to be removed a few days ago as he felt that they looked ugly, a police officer told Newsline.
Goel, however, said that since buildings in Lutyens Delhi cannot be multi-storeyed,it was fairly easy for thieves to break into the office. This is Lutyens Delhi and we are not supposed to construct any storey above the ground. The boundary walls are not too high and anyone can easily leap over them, Goel said.
According to police,Goels employees had locked the office situated at 74,Babar Road around 8 pm on Saturday. However, when his clerk Pooran Singh opened it on Monday morning,he found the office ransacked.
Pooran, who lives in Wazirpur, opened the office at 8.45 am. The entire office had been ransacked and things were strewn all over. Realising that a theft had taken place,Singh alerted Goel at 9.10 am,who in turn informed us, the officer added.
Police suspect that the thieves broke into the office by leaping over the rear wall and spent considerable time inside. They went into Goels room, broke open the almirah and stole valuables kept in it ,police added.
The thieves smoked cigarettes in the office. It was evident from stubs recovered from the spot. They ate a watermelon and musk-melon kept in the refrigerator before escaping with cash ranging between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh as well as gold and silver coins, police said. A case of robbery has been registered.
