A property dealer was shot dead by armed assailants in northeast Delhi’s Bhajanpura area Tuesday morning, said police, adding that three more people were injured in the shooting.
According to police, the victim has been identified as Kailash Gupta (42). The incident took place at 7.30 am when the victim and his son Rajan (16) were out visiting a few people in the locality, said an officer.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) A K Singla said, “Kailash and his son were on sitting on his motorcycle and talking to a man outside a sweet shop in Bhajanpura Chowk. A car passed by them. One of the four assailants got out of the car and started shooting at Gupta. Two more people who were standing nearby were hit by bullets and sustained injuries. The injured were rushed to hospital where Kailash was declared brought dead.”

Police sources said the assailant fired at least 12 rounds before fleeing in the car towards Ghaziabad. Police added that the men also ran over a man, Javed, who was walking on the road while they were making their getaway.
While Gupta died of four bullet injuries, police said Rajan sustained three bullet injuries on both legs. He has been admitted to GTB Hospital, said an officer.
The sources added, “In his statement to police, Rajan said he and his father had gone to get money from someone. He also said land belonging to his family in Ghaziabad’s Loni area was at the centre of a property dispute. But he said they had not received any threats before this incident.”
The DCP said police are scanning CCTV footage from the area. “We suspect it is a case of personal enmity. However, we are not ruling out property dispute as a motive yet,” he added. Police said Gupta hailed from Loni but had been living in Harsh Vihar for the past few months.
The injured men have been identified as Banwari Lal, who works as a security guard in the area, and Ram Lakhan, an autorickshaw driver. They are being treated at GTB hospital.
A case has been registered at Bhajanpura police station and the Crime Branch has been roped in to investigate the case, said an officer.
Incidentally, the shooting took place a few metres away from a police post. Residents said a police constable rushed to the spot on hearing the gunshots and took the men to the hospital.
