A loan that was not repaid, triggering a court case, was behind the shooting at Saket court, police said. On Friday, suspended lawyer Kameshwar Kumar Singh allegedly shot at a woman, M Radha, against whom he had filed a case last year for “cheating” him of Rs 25 lakh.
According to police, Singh had enrolled in the Bar Council of Delhi in 2005. He practised at Saket court, dealing in civil and criminal cases. In 2017, an advocate, also practising at Saket court, filed a case of land grab against him, due to which he was suspended from BCD on September 12 last year for two years.
On November 25 last year, Singh filed a case under IPC section 420 (cheating) against Radha and another accused, advocate Rajendra Jha.
As per the FIR in the case, Singh said Jha introduced him to Radha, claiming she could multiply invested money at a rate of 20-40% every month. When Singh refused to invest, Jha said Radha was in dire need of money. He claimed Jha requested him to give her Rs 25 lakh as a ‘friendly loan’, of which Jha would be the guarantor to repay the said amount with an interest of 20%.
Singh gave her the amount. However, he claimed she only paid him back Rs 3 lakh and filed a complaint at Saket police station last December. “He induced me very deliberately and cunningly to invest my hard-earned money,” Singh alleged in the FIR.
Senior officers also said both Jha and Singh were handling several cases of cheating and forgery in which Radha was allegedly involved.
While Jha was granted anticipatory bail in the case last year, Radha was arrested in December and granted interim bail by the High Court on March 18, till July 26, on the condition that she would return the money.
On Friday, Radha was attending a mediation hearing before the court of Metropolitan Mag-istrate Saurabh Goyal in connection with a Rs 5 lakh cheque bounce in the same cheating case. In an order, MM Goyal, noting that the “complainant has fired bullets upon the accused” and the latter had suffered injuries, adjourned the proceedings to August 23.
Singh lives with his family in Chhattarpur, and Radha, a tuition teacher, lives with her husband and child in Vasant Kunj. Radha’s husband Arun Radhaswami said he had dropped her at the court at 10 am, and soon got a call that she had been shot. “I rushed to the spot and accompanied her to the hospital,” he said.
