A 19-year-old man was beaten to death with a bat in Bulandshahr’s Rasoolpur village following an argument during a cricket match on Sunday, police said.

According to the police, the argument began after the victim, Shakti Bhati, who was batting, said the last ball in the match was a wide ball and requested it be thrown again. “Throw the last ball again,” he said. Soon he was hit by the bat on his neck and fell to the ground.

He was taken to a private hospital in Unchagaon, where the doctor declared him dead, according to the police.

“The postmortem of the boy was done and we have registered an FIR on the basis of his father’s complaint,” said Ram Karan, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Bulandshahr. A police team has been formed to arrest the accused, identified as Vishesh Sharma, he added.

Bhati had gone to the grounds of a junior high school in the Ahar police station limits with his friends. His uncle Mohit Kumar said his field is near the ground.

“I was working in the field. Then I saw a few boys coming saying that there was a fight on the ground. I asked who got into the fight. Some of them said Shakti, my nephew. I left my kasla (ploughing equipment) and ran towards the ground. I saw Shakti lying on the ground. I pressed his chest and blew in his mouth several times but he did not move. He was dead,” Kumar said.

“The police were alerted later. I took him to the hospital and the doctor declared him dead,” said Bhati’s uncle.
