Rohit Bal threw open the portico of his new gothic-style Italian restaurant Cibo at the Hotel Janpath for the grand finale of Delhi Fashion Week — and it was like a date with uber-fashionable vampires. As guests and fashionistas craned their necks under the light of weathered lanterns,Bal’s lusty vampish woman,in laced-up black corset, smudged black eyes and perfectly coiffed hair, surveyed the scene frostily and glided down with a majestic swoop into the audience.

Bal’s show had as much drama as JJ Valaya’s at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week,as models strutted in vampire collars, voluminous skirts panelled with flowers and lantern-sleeved gowns. He moved into a colourful zone with double-breasted jackets and tapered trousers. Towards the end of the show, the audience was jolted by a headless mannequin hanging from the branch of a tree. “This is my showstopper,” quipped Bal the Impaler after the show. “I was fed up with people asking about the showstopper.”

He was blasé about buyers as well, perhaps because there weren’t very many of them. “The serious part of the line is the art. I am not concerned with sales and the wearability factor. People who buy my clothes will keep buying them even in these times,” said Bal,who confided that he designed the collection in keeping with the extravagant gothic decor of his restaurant. Lifting the haunting mood were shirtless male models taking a lap around the arena dressed in aprons and balancing trays on their hands. What a pitch for a restaurant.
