The Crime Branch of Delhi Police on Tuesday formally arrested Head Constable Amit Tomar on the charge of extorting money from a Jaitpur-based travel agent. Police said Tomar was extorting money from people by threatening to implicate them in fake cases.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said,Tomar was arrested from the Saket court premises on Tuesday afternoon.
Tomar, who had been involved in a firing in Nehru Place, had filed for anticipatory bail and obtained a non-coercive order from court, because of which he could not be arrested.
He was apprehended after a sessions court dismissed his bail plea on Tuesday afternoon.
The case was reported after the travel agent, who also ran a coaching centre, had filed a complaint with the Crime Branch stating that Tomar,Sub-Inspector Nagender Kumar and Constable Kaushal had extorted
Rs 1.5 lakh from him by threatening to implicate him in a false case of selling fake tickets. All three were posted at the Nehru Place police post.
While the demand was for
Rs 5 lakh, the agent could pay only Rs 1.5 lakh. He alleged that the three policemen took away his equipment and told him that it would be returned when he paid the rest of the amount. The equipment, however, was never returned.
Meanwhile, after the agent had filed his complaint,a police team was sent to Nehru Place to apprehend the three. When the team cornered them,Tomar allegedly opened fire and escaped. SI Nagender, who also opened fire, was arrested. There is no trace of Kaushal, police said.
